AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge 2026: Support for African Digital Trade Innovators

The AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge 2026 is looking for African innovators, startups and young entrepreneurs developing digital solutions that can make cross-border trade easier. The challenge is organised by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat as part of efforts to put Africa’s Digital Trade Protocol into practical use.

The second edition is particularly interested in solutions that can help businesses overcome some of the everyday problems associated with trading across African borders. Applications are open until September 4, 2026.

What Is the Challenge About?

Africa has a huge market, but selling across borders can still be complicated. Businesses may face difficulties with payments, finding reliable market information, logistics, regulations and reaching customers in another country.

The AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge is looking for technology that can help solve some of these problems.

Potential solutions may cover areas such as:

• Digital marketplaces and e-commerce
• Cross-border digital payments
• Trade and market information
• Logistics and supply-chain technology
• Digital identity and verification
• Trade documentation
• Compliance and regulatory technology
• Other digital tools that make intra-African trade easier

The focus is on solutions that can contribute to a more connected African digital market. This is closely linked to the AfCFTA’s wider push to make digital trade work better for businesses, particularly MSMEs, women and young entrepreneurs.

Who Can Apply?

The challenge is open to African innovators and entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35.

Eligible applicants can apply as:

• Individuals
• Teams
• Startups
• Enterprises

Your solution must address an existing barrier to cross-border trade and demonstrate how it can contribute to the implementation of the AfCFTA.

Importantly, the 2026 challenge is looking for solutions that have reached the operational or scaling stage. This means applicants should have more than an idea on paper.

What Will Selected Innovators Receive?

The programme has several levels of support.

Top 50 Innovators

The top 50 shortlisted applicants will receive foundational support, including participation in AfCFTA-led digital trade capacity-building programmes, networking opportunities and inclusion in the AfCFTA innovation community.

Top 10 Winners

The top 10 will receive more targeted business support, including:

• A tailored incubation or acceleration programme
• Opportunities to present their solutions to investors and potential partners
• Promotion through AfCFTA communication channels and events
• Priority opportunities to participate in relevant AfCFTA platforms

Top 5 Grand Winners

The five highest-ranked innovators will receive additional recognition and strategic support.

They will be formally recognised at a high-level AfCFTA Forum, meet with the AfCFTA Secretary-General, receive tailored mentorship and business development advice, and become AfCFTA Digital Innovation Champions.

What Kind of Startup Should Apply?

This opportunity makes the most sense for a startup whose product can actually be used by businesses involved in African trade.

For example, a founder building a platform that helps Nigerian manufacturers find buyers in Ghana, a fintech developing easier cross-border payments, or a logistics company helping merchants track shipments between African countries could have a relevant solution.

When preparing your application, explain the trade problem clearly. Then show how your technology solves it, who is already using it, and how the solution could work across more African markets.
