Boma Prize for Africa

The Boma Prize for Africa is a pan-African entrepreneurship competition created to help small businesses, startups and young entrepreneurs develop and scale their ventures. The programme has supported entrepreneurs across Africa through business training, pitch competitions, mentorship and funding. According to the organisers, the prize has provided a total of US$20,000 in business support through its competition.

What Is the Boma Prize About?

The Boma Prize is built around a simple idea. African entrepreneurs with promising businesses need more than encouragement. They need practical support that can help them become stronger and more sustainable businesses.

The competition gives entrepreneurs a platform to present their businesses and demonstrate their potential. Participants can receive business development support, mentorship, exposure and access to a wider entrepreneurship network.

The organisers say they have trained more than 2,400 entrepreneurs across 34 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.

The programme also focuses on areas linked to sustainable development, job creation and improved livelihoods.

Who Is It For?

The Boma Prize is aimed at African entrepreneurs who already have a business or startup and can demonstrate that it has potential to grow.

The competition has previously accepted:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and based in Africa. Previous editions also required applicants to have completed the Boma Consult Entrepreneurial Certification Program and obtained the relevant certificate. Applicants should therefore check the requirements for the current edition before applying.

What Can Participants Gain?

The prize goes beyond the cash award.

Successful participants can gain:

The organisers also maintain the Boma Tribe, a wider community where entrepreneurs can access resources, mentorship, grant-writing assistance, investor connections and other opportunities.

One previous awardee, Anywash App, reported that the Boma support helped the company develop its technology business, participate in other programmes and secure additional funding.

Deadline and Application Process

Deadline: Application for Boma Prize for Africa is currently opened and deadline is unspecified, apply early to avoid missing out.

The organisers encourage interested entrepreneurs to join the Boma community and follow their official channels for future application announcements.

For African entrepreneurs looking for business support rather than a simple cash handout, the Boma Prize for Africa remains an opportunity worth watching. Its combination of funding, training, mentorship and connections can be useful for a small business that has already started operating and now needs help taking the next step.
