Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, is Africa’s biggest prize dedicated to engineering innovation. The Prize awards commercialisation support to African innovators developing scalable engineering solutions to local challenges. The Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027 was established to help bridge that gap. Beyond the prize money, the programme provides world-class business support that helps innovators transform engineering ideas into sustainable enterprises.

About the Africa Prize

Launched in 2014 by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Africa Prize is the continent’s leading award dedicated to engineering innovation. Each year, up to 16 innovators from Sub-Saharan Africa are selected to participate in an intensive eight-month commercialisation programme designed to strengthen both their products and businesses.

Participants receive tailored mentoring from engineering and business experts, communication and pitching support, investor exposure, and opportunities to connect with a global network of industry leaders. Since its launch, the programme has supported more than 180 businesses across 24 African countries, with alumni collectively raising over $34 million in grants and investment.

Who Can Apply?

The competition welcomes innovators from any engineering discipline, provided their solution addresses a real challenge and has clear commercial potential.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be 18 years or older.
• Be a citizen of and currently living in a Sub-Saharan African country.
• Apply individually or as the lead member of a team.
• Have an engineering innovation that is already in the early stages of commercialisation.
• Present a working hardware prototype or a functional minimum viable product (MVP) for software-based innovations.
• Demonstrate customer interest and submit a realistic business plan showing how the innovation can grow.
• Be fluent in English, as the programme is conducted entirely in English.

What Successful Applicants Receive

Being selected for the Africa Prize comes with benefits that extend well beyond financial rewards.

Participants will receive:

• An eight-month business acceleration and commercialisation programme.
• One-on-one mentoring from Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows and industry specialists.
• Business development, communication, and investment-readiness training.
• Networking opportunities with investors, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders.
• International exposure through the Academy’s global innovation network.
• A funded opportunity to attend programme activities in the United Kingdom and an African host country.

At the conclusion of the programme, finalists will compete for £85,000 in total prize funding:

• £50,000 for the overall winner.
• £10,000 each for three runners-up.
• £5,000 for the One-to-Watch Award.

Deadline and Application Process

Applications for the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027 opened on 13 July 2026 and will close on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.

The application process takes place in two stages. During Stage One, applicants submit details about their innovation, team, and supporting technical documents through the Academy’s Grant Management System. Only longlisted candidates will be invited to complete the more detailed Stage Two application, which includes business planning and commercialisation information.
