Japan-UNITAR Youth & Women Programme 2026 (Nigeria)

Japan-UNITAR Youth & Women Programme

Young entrepreneurs and women-led businesses across Nigeria now have a fresh, fully funded pathway to sharpen their skills, connect with international partners, and potentially travel to Japan. The Government of Japan-UNITAR Empowering Youth and Women Programme 2026 has opened applications for aspiring entrepreneurs, startup founders, innovators, and social change-makers across Sub-Saharan Africa, and Nigerians are on the confirmed list of eligible countries.

Organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) with backing from the Government and People of Japan, this initiative is designed to help young people and women transform promising ideas into scalable, investment-ready ventures that respond to real economic, social, and environmental challenges. For Nigerian business owners looking for a structured, no-cost capacity-building opportunity with genuine international exposure, this programme deserves a serious look.

About the Programme

The Empowering Youth and Women Programme is a multi-phase capacity development initiative that blends virtual learning, hands-on project development, and mentorship from industry experts. It is built around the theme of strengthening public-private partnership between Japan and Africa, and it draws a direct line between grassroots innovation and larger regional priorities, including conversations tied to the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).

Participants will move through structured training covering entrepreneurship fundamentals, digital innovation, leadership development, and sustainable business practices. Beyond the classroom-style modules, the programme places heavy emphasis on business development and investment readiness, meaning participants leave not just with certificates but with sharper, more fundable business models. A standout feature is the competitive Japan immersion component, where a select group of top-performing participants get the chance to travel to Japan and take part in the Africa-Japan Innovation and Partnership Round Table, engaging directly with investors, development partners, and innovation ecosystem builders.

The full programme runs across several months, from August 2026 through to early 2027, giving participants enough time to genuinely develop and refine their ventures rather than rushing through a short workshop.
