The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Program (TEF) is a highly competitive initiative designed to support and empower African entrepreneurs.

 

Founded by Tony O. Elumelu, a Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, the TEF program is focused on promoting economic growth and development across the African continent.

 

The program aims to identify and nurture talented entrepreneurs, providing them with the resources and support they need to turn their business ideas into successful ventures.

 

Through the TEF program, participants have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, learn from experienced mentors, and access a range of business development resources.

 

The ultimate goal of the TEF program is to create a new generation of successful African entrepreneurs who can drive economic growth and contribute to the development of their communities.

Brief History of the TEF Programme and the Journey so Far

The Tony Elumelu Foundation launched its TEF Entrepreneurship Program in 2015 with a $100 million commitment to empower 10,000 African entrepreneurs over 10 years. The program has trained and funded over 20,847 entrepreneurs across all 54 African countries and provides support to over 1 million Africans through its digital platform, TEFConnect. The Foundation partners with institutions such as UNDP, the African Development Bank, and UBA to create impact in Africa.

I remember when it was first launched in 2015, and 1000 successful entrepreneurs were awarded a $5000 grant each. Seven years later, many other notable organizations, like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), GIZ, and the European Union (EU), just to mention a few, have joined forces with the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program to increase the number of awardees per year from 1000 to over 2000 per year.

  • Have a business idea or an existing business that is based in Africa and operating for less than three years.
  • Show how your company has the capacity to develop the economy and create jobs.
  • Be able to commit to the full duration of the program, which includes online training sessions
  • Be prepared to pitch, use the TEF business plan format, and submit regular updates.

Note that meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the TEF program. The selection process is highly competitive, and only a limited number of applicants will be accepted into the cohort.
