Africa Business Contest Impact Challenge Award

Africa Business Contest — Impact Challenge Award 2026: Up to JPY 1M

Not every major funding opportunity for Nigerian businesses comes from within Africa. Some of the most underutilised opportunities for Nigerian startups come from international platforms that most local founders never hear about. The Africa Business Contest, organised by the City of Kobe in Japan, is one of them and applications for the 2026 edition are open right now.

The Africa Business Contest — Impact Challenge Award is a City of Kobe initiative that supports business ideas and startups focused on solving social and economic challenges in Africa. It promotes inclusive growth, sustainable development, and cross-border collaboration between Japanese and African enterprisesProgram Features

The Africa Business Contest is a global innovation platform that connects entrepreneurs, startups, and students with opportunities in African markets. By combining funding, advisory support, and cross-border collaboration, it accelerates the development of scalable business solutions that contribute to sustainable development across the continent.

The competition runs under the theme “Business Solutions for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development in Africa” and is structured across multiple award categories. The programme offers cash prizes of up to JPY 1,000,000 for the Grand Prize, with additional awards for excellence in business and student categories. At current exchange rates, JPY 1,000,000 is roughly equivalent to over ₦1 million, making this a meaningful financial prize for early-stage and growing businesses.

Businesses planning expansion into African markets are also eligible to apply, meaning you do not have to already be operating on the continent in full capacity. As long as your solution is designed to address a real challenge in Africa, your application qualifies for consideration.

The contest culminates in a pitch event held as part of Kobe’s “Africa Month” celebration, where finalists present their ideas and businesses to an international panel of judges, investors, and partners.

Eligibility Criteria

One of the strongest points of this contest is how open it is. It is open to startups, companies, and students of any nationality working on Africa-focused business solutions. This means Nigerian founders, regardless of whether they are currently based in Nigeria or abroad, can apply as long as the business idea or solution is directed at solving a real problem in Africa.

To be a competitive applicant, your entry should meet the following general conditions:

  • Your business idea, startup, or company must focus on solving a social or economic challenge in Africa
  • You must have a clear and scalable business model that demonstrates potential for sustainable impact
  • Students with Africa-focused business concepts are eligible to apply under a dedicated student category
  • Existing companies looking to expand their operations into African markets are also welcome to apply
  • Applications are accepted from individuals and organisations of any nationality, including Nigerians

What You Will Gain

Beyond the cash prize of up to JPY 1,000,000 for the Grand Prize winner, the programme offers significant non-financial value that can be even more impactful for a growing Nigerian business.

Finalists receive advisory services, business matching, and market research support. Business matching in this context means the City of Kobe actively connects finalists with Japanese companies, investors, and trade partners who have an interest in African markets, opening doors to international partnerships that most Nigerian startups would struggle to access on their own.

Participants also gain market expansion guidance, exposure to Japan’s investment and innovation ecosystem, and the visibility that comes with being featured on an international stage. For Nigerian businesses looking to attract global attention, investors, or cross-border partnerships, this platform provides exactly that kind of credibility and reach.

The contest also carries strong reputational value. Being a finalist or winner of a City of Kobe initiative is a recognised credential that can strengthen grant applications, investor pitches, and media profiles back home in Nigeria.
