Here is something many Nigerian developers still haven’t noticed: the country now has its own open-source large language model, and it speaks Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English. It is called N-ATLAS, and the government wants people to build real products on it.
That is the whole point of the NITDA National AI Innovation Challenge 2026. It is less about a cash prize and more about getting your AI product in front of government buyers, investors and the national AI talent registry.
About the Programme
The challenge is run by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) through its National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR). N-ATLAS, short for Nigerian Atlas for Languages and AI at Scale, is fine-tuned from Llama-3 8B and includes automatic speech recognition for voice apps.
Teams pick one of three problem statements:
- Build developer tools that make N-ATLAS easier to build with
- Build applications for Nigerians who do not type, meaning voice-first services
- Fine-tune N-ATLAS for high-impact sectors like health, agriculture, education, legal services and financial inclusion
There are two tracks. Academia and Research is for university and research-institute teams, while Innovation and Enterprise covers individual builders, startups and registered companies.
Benefits
Every applicant gets technical clinics, N-ATLAS onboarding, reference materials and ecosystem briefings. That alone is useful if you have never worked with a local-language model before.
Shortlisted teams move up a level:
- N-ATLAS API credentials and compute credits from partner infrastructure
- Technical mentorship during a dedicated acceleration phase
- Invitations to the Nigeria AI Innovators Summit
- A spot in the NITDA AI talent registry
- Priority consideration for government AI pilots
Enterprise-track winners get the prize that matters most for a startup: a government procurement pathway review, ONDI incubation support, investor introductions and a listing in the national AI startup directory. Research-track winners get an NCAIR lab partnership, co-contributor credit on N-ATLAS and publication support.
Eligibility Criteria
- All team members must be Nigerian citizens, or the applicant must be a registered Nigerian entity
- Individual applicants must be at least 18 years old
- Company applicants must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)
- Diaspora teams must have at least 50% of members based in Nigeria
- Research-track team leads must be enrolled in or employed by an accredited Nigerian university or research institution
- Submissions must be original and must not have won an award in another competition
- Each team can submit to only one problem statement
- Every entry must include a working technical artefact integrated with N-ATLAS
Documents Needed to Apply
- A functioning prototype, tool or fine-tuned model built on N-ATLAS
- A written description of your solution and the problem statement it addresses
- Team member details showing Nigerian citizenship or residency
- CAC registration certificate, if applying as a company
- An institutional endorsement letter signed by your Head of Department, for the research track
- All materials in English
If you plan to enter as a company and your business isn’t on the CAC register yet, sort that out now, because a procurement pathway only means something if the government can actually contract you. Our business registration service handles CAC incorporation quickly so you can focus on the build.

Final Thoughts
Two weeks is tight for a working build, so don’t overthink the idea. A simple voice app that lets a Hausa-speaking trader check prices, or a clinic tool that takes Yoruba voice notes, is exactly what judges are asking for.
