Coursera’s recent “Job Skills of 2025” report highlights the top 10 tech skills projected to be in high demand by 2025, emphasizing a significant need for cybersecurity expertise.
Top 10 Tech Skills for 2025:
- Incident Management & Response: Effectively managing and resolving IT incidents.
- Threat Management & Modeling: Identifying and neutralizing software threats.
- Security Information & Event Management (SIEM): Enhancing security posture using SIEM tools.
- Computer Security: Protecting digital information and systems.
- Vulnerability Management: Detecting and addressing security weaknesses in systems and software.
- Network Planning & Design: Designing and building reliable computer networks.
- Network Management & Monitoring: Ensuring the smooth operation of computer networks.
- Software Documentation: Creating clear, user-friendly instructions for software use.
- Infrastructure Security: Safeguarding critical computer infrastructure systems.
- Data Analysis Expressions (DAX): Analyzing data and uncovering insights with advanced formulas.
The report underscores a global shortage of nearly five million cybersecurity professionals, highlighting the urgency for upskilling in this domain. Notably, six of the top ten skills are directly related to cybersecurity, reflecting the increasing complexity of cyber threats. Roles such as Cybersecurity Specialist, Chief Information Security Officer, and Cybersecurity Analyst are among the fastest-growing positions.
Rav Ahuja, IBM’s Global Program Director, reported a 75% increase in cyberattacks during Q3 2024, further emphasizing the critical need for cybersecurity expertise. Additionally, over half of public organizations cite a lack of resources and skills as their biggest obstacle to achieving cyber resilience, indicating a significant gap that can be addressed through targeted upskilling.
Coursera’s CEO, Jeff Maggioncalda, noted that advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the rise of Generative AI are reshaping skill demands. Skills in cybersecurity, risk management, and data ethics are becoming indispensable as industries adapt to evolving technological landscapes. Maggioncalda emphasized the importance of using AI responsibly, stating that integrating AI technologies with robust security measures will be critical for addressing sophisticated cyber threats.
