NBTI NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 for Nigerian Startups (Up to £1.5 Million)

Calling on Nigerian founders with innovative products that solves real problems, you can now apply the NBTI NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026—the same platform where Interface Africa recently secured £1.5 million in investment support.
Organized by the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) in partnership with UKALD, this challenge is designed to take indigenous Nigerian innovations and put them directly in front of global investors in London and Toronto.
If you are building something transformative, here is why you need to apply.

The NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 is Nigeria’s premier innovation bridge. It is more than a competition; it is a national movement to commercialize home-grown technology.
The goal is simple: identifying high-potential innovations from across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas and refining them into investable global businesses. The program moves you from a local prototype to a global stage, culminating in a Grand Finale where you pitch directly to venture capitalists, policymakers, and industry leaders in the UK or Canada.

Benefits for Startups

The stakes here are incredibly high. The 2025 winner walked away with £1.5 million to scale their solar financing solution.

  • Massive Funding Potential: This is one of the few avenues where you can access seven-figure investment support (in GBP) relatively early in your journey.
  • Global Exposure: Finalists don’t just pitch in Abuja. The Grand Finale takes place internationally (London or Toronto), giving you direct access to diaspora investors and European venture firms.
  • World-Class Mentorship: Selected innovators attend the NextGen Boot Camp (scheduled for July 2026), featuring expert-led training from partners like Teesside University (UK) and Google.
  • Commercialization Support: Winners get fast-tracked into NBTI incubation centers, offering legal advisory, IP protection, and business registration support in both Nigeria and the UK.

Eligibility Criteria

The NBTI is looking for “life-transforming innovations.” To qualify, you generally need to be a Nigerian researcher, entrepreneur, or startup founder working in one of these strategic sectors:

  • Green & Renewable Energy: Clean power, climate resilience, and flood detection systems.
  • Deep Tech: AI, Robotics, and Advanced Semiconductors.
  • Health & Safety: Safety tracking devices and advanced medical tech.
  • Creative & Digital: 3D Animation, Software/App Development, and Future Telecom (6G).
  • Inclusivity: Solutions specifically driving gender-inclusive innovation.
Note: You must have a tangible innovation or prototype. This is not a hackathon for abstract ideas; it is a showcase for solutions ready to be commercialized.

Application Process

You will need to submit your entry via the official portal. You must be prepared to demonstrate the commercial viability of your innovation.

    • Boot Camp: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the Innovation Boot Camp in Abuja in July 2026.
