What Is the Open Startup Science Road Program?

The Open Startup Science Road Program is a pan-African initiative launched by Open Startup as part of its tenth anniversary celebration. The programme introduces two structured startup journeys that replace the organisation’s previous acceleration portfolio.

The first is the Pre-Seed Track, which supports startups that are still validating their products or technology. The second is the Seed Track, which is designed for startups that have demonstrated traction and are preparing for regional or global expansion.

The programme welcomes both DeepTech startups, whose innovations are based on scientific or engineering breakthroughs, and Tech-Enabled startups that use technology to solve business and social challenges.

Priority sectors include:

• Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
• Climate Technology and Clean Energy
• Agritech
• HealthTech, MedTech and Biotech
• FinTech
• EdTech
• Logistics and Supply Chain
• SaaS and other emerging technologies
• Circular Economy and Waste Management

Selected startups will participate in structured programmes lasting six months for the Pre-Seed Track and one year for the Seed Track, receiving tailored support throughout their journey.

Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to startups from across Africa that are using technology to solve meaningful problems.

To qualify, applicants should:

• Be incorporated in an African country.
• Operate primarily within Africa.
• Build a technology-based solution addressing a demonstrated challenge.
• Have a committed founding team.
• Demonstrate proficiency in English.
• Be available to participate actively throughout the programme.

For the Pre-Seed Track, startups should have an MVP, proof of concept, or early prototype with some level of customer validation.

For the Seed Track, applicants should already have market traction through paying customers, strategic partnerships, pilots, grants, contracts, or revenue growth and be ready to scale their operations.
