Circular Packaging Challenge 2026: €16,000 in Prizes

If your startup is building solutions for circular packaging and you have not yet applied to the Circular Packaging Challenge 2026, you have twelve days before the window closes. This is the third edition of an international open innovation initiative run by Ecoembes and TheCircularLab, connecting innovative startups with nearly 30 of the world’s most recognised packaging-intensive companies, including Nestlé, L’Oréal, McDonald’s, Mahou-San Miguel, Damm, Mattel, and KH Lloreda. The challenge is free to enter, distributes €16,000 in prizes, and offers selected finalists something more valuable than cash: funded pilot projects to test their solutions in real commercial environments, directly with the companies in the room.

What This Challenge Is and Why It Is Structured the Way It Is

The Circular Packaging Challenge is not a pitch competition for early ideas. It was designed to find startups with solutions that are already in or near commercialisation and accelerate their adoption within the packaging value chains of major consumer brands. Ecoembes, the Spanish non-profit collective packaging system, set it up because the companies it works with need packaging innovation they cannot generate entirely from within, and the startups developing that innovation need access to corporate buyers who can test, adopt, and scale their solutions.

The structure reflects that intent. Rather than asking startups to compete against each other across a single broad theme, the Circular Packaging Challenge 2026 divides the competition into four specific challenge areas tied to real problems the collaborating companies are trying to solve.

The Four Challenge Areas

Challenge 1: Food and Beverage

This challenge is looking for ecodesign and new processes for flexible packaging that incorporates recycled materials, new alternative materials that improve the overall circularity of food packaging, and alternatives to traditional coatings in terms of format, material, or technology. Startups targeting the food packaging supply chain with a genuinely new material or manufacturing approach belong here.

Challenge 2: Beverages and Dairy Products

Focused on packaging management models for the beverage and dairy sectors, this challenge seeks innovations in reducing and reusing packaging, logistics improvements that make circular models more commercially viable, and incentive systems that nudge consumers and supply chains toward more circular behaviour. If your startup works on reuse systems, refillable container infrastructure, or reverse logistics, this is the most relevant track.

Challenge 3: Non-Food

This challenge targets technologies that improve the identification, separation, and sorting of complex or small-format packaging in non-food categories, as well as technologies that enable the reintroduction of recovered materials back into productive use. Startups building detection systems, AI-assisted sorting tools, or advanced recycling technologies for non-food packaging streams fit here.

Challenge 4: Traceability

The fourth challenge is for software and digital solutions that track packaging across the entire value chain, covering lifecycle data capture, sustainability reporting, and end-to-end management systems for refillable or reusable packaging. If your startup is working on digital product passports, blockchain traceability, or packaging lifecycle analytics, this is the right entry point.

Who the Challenge Is For

The Circular Packaging Challenge 2026 is an international call. It is explicitly open to startups from anywhere in the world, which means African and Nigerian startups building solutions in any of the four challenge areas are fully eligible to apply. The 2024 edition’s winners included companies from the United Kingdom and Norway, and the honourable mentions came from the United States and the United Kingdom. The selection is based entirely on the quality and relevance of the solution, not the location of the startup.

Eligibility requirements are minimal. Your startup must be established, less than 10 years old, operating at a high level of innovation, and proposing solutions that genuinely advance circular packaging. The programme specifically values solutions that are already in a commercialisation phase. If you have paying customers, signed pilots, or measurable commercial traction, that evidence works strongly in your favour during evaluation.

What Selected Startups Receive

Sixteen finalists, four from each of the four challenge areas, are invited to the final event in Madrid on November 19, 2026. Travel and accommodation costs for the finals are fully covered by the programme. At the final event, finalists pitch their solutions to the jury in front of the collaborating companies, with structured networking sessions between startups and corporate partners built into the agenda.

The four challenge winners each receive €4,000, bringing the total prize pool to €16,000. More significant than the prize money is what comes next. Ecoembes and the collaborating companies actively propose pilot projects with the startups whose solutions are most compelling, funding those pilots to test the solutions in real operational environments. A funded pilot with a company like Nestlé or McDonald’s is the kind of commercial validation that can reshape a startup’s fundraising trajectory and market position.

Beyond the finals, all participating startups gain visibility within a packaging ecosystem that spans food, beverages, dairy, beauty, home care, retail, toys, and foodservice, and access to a network of companies that represent some of the highest-volume packaging users in Europe.

How the Selection Process Works

The process runs in four stages. First, every startup completes a questionnaire covering their organisation and their proposed solution in relation to one of the four challenge areas. All applications are then reviewed by an independent jury made up of professionals from Ecoembes and the collaborating companies. Sixteen finalists are selected and invited to Madrid. After the final pitch event, winning startups are announced and pilot project conversations begin.

Evaluation criteria focus on three things: the maturity and commercial trajectory of the solution, the level of genuine innovation involved, and how directly and effectively the solution addresses the specific challenge it was entered against. Reviewers are experienced packaging professionals, not generalist investors. Applications that use precise technical language and demonstrate real commercial progress tend to score significantly higher than those that stay at a conceptual level.

How to Apply

Registration is free and takes only a few minutes through the official challenge platform. You will submit a questionnaire about your startup and the challenge area your solution addresses. The programme recommends registering early so that the collaborating companies have more time to discover your solution before the deadline.

You can also schedule a brief online meeting with the Ecoembes team through their bookings page before applying, which is worth doing if you are unsure which of the four challenge areas is the strongest fit for your solution.

The Circular Packaging Challenge 2026 is one of the few international open innovation programmes that takes packaging circularity seriously at a technical level and backs that with funded pilots inside real supply chains. For a startup with a mature, innovative solution in this space, the combination of prize funding, corporate access, and pilot project potential makes this one of the highest-value free applications currently open worldwide.
