Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 for young Nigerian leaders, deadline 13 October 2026

Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027: Fully Funded 6-Week Leadership Programme in the USA for Young Nigerians

The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 is open, and Nigerians are on the eligible list. The programme is the flagship of the US Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), and it takes about 550 young African leaders to the United States for six weeks of executive-style leadership training in the summer of 2027.

One thing to be clear about before you invest time: this is a leadership and networking programme, not a cash grant. If your goal is business capital, treat it as a door to networks, partners and credibility rather than a funding source. The deadline is 13 October 2026, so you have days, not weeks.

About the Programme

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is run by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IREX. Since 2014 it has brought nearly 7,800 young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training.

Fellows spend six weeks at a US college or university in an executive-style Leadership Institute that focuses on business and trade, emerging technologies, and governance and security. The Fellowship begins in June 2027.

Benefits

The value here is access. You learn from American experts, meet leaders in the public and private sectors, and join an alumni network of nearly 7,800 African leaders. For a Nigerian founder, that network is often the real prize, because it opens doors to partners, buyers and collaborators that are hard to reach from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt.

You also get to explore American innovation and industry first-hand, and to build partnerships with American organisations and businesses. Fellows are not allowed to bring dependents, so plan for six weeks without family.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be between 25 and 35 years old on or before 13 October 2026. Exceptional applicants aged 21 to 24 may be considered.
  • Be a citizen of an eligible country (Nigeria is included) and be living there permanently as of 1 February 2027 and in June 2027.
  • Be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Be eligible for a US J-1 visa and not be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Not be an employee, or immediate family member of an employee, of the US Government, including a US embassy or consulate.
  • Not be an alumnus or previous participant of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

What the Selection Panel Looks For

Selection is a merit-based open competition. Applications are scored on English proficiency, a proven record of accomplishment in business, trade, emerging technologies, governance or security, and a clear interest in building partnerships with American organisations.

They also look for a commitment to return home and serve your community, the ability to work in groups, strong communication skills, and adaptability. Concrete results beat big titles, so put numbers on what you have built.

Documents Needed to Apply

The online application asks for your background, leadership and professional achievements, and short written responses. Read the official application instructions first so you know every section before you start. Semi-finalists are later asked for an international passport or government-issued photo ID, plus proof of age, citizenship and residency.

If you run a business, have your story and numbers ready, including registration details. Need your CAC registration sorted before you apply? See our business registration services or check the Corporate Affairs Commission for requirements.
