The FATE Foundation AI Upskilling Programme 2026 is a multi-country initiative designed to embed advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across Africa. Launched in collaboration with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and supported by Google.org, the program targets universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.
Program Details
- Target Audience: Accredited HEIs offering STEM programs, specifically focusing on lecturers (AI Champions), teaching assistants, and penultimate/final-year students.
- Curriculum: Utilizes the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundation’s curriculum, featuring localized modules such as:
- Building Small Language Models.
- Designing and training Neural Networks.
- Transformer Architecture and Model Fine-tuning.
- A capstone project for real-world AI impact.
- Scope & Impact: The program aims to reach over 30,900 students and 292 lecturers across at least 30 institutions over the next three years.
Key Program Benefits
- Capacity Building: Free training for at least four lecturers per institution to become “AI Champions”.
- Integration Support: Access to curriculum frameworks that can be embedded into existing courses for long-term sustainability.
- Student Readiness: Equipping students with industry-relevant, employable AI competencies and mentorship.
- Recognition: Visibility through continental AI showcases and awards.
Eligibility & Application
To qualify, institutions must:
- Be an accredited HEI offering STEM programs in the four target countries.
- Demonstrate faculty availability and adequate technical infrastructure.
- Commit to integrating the AI curriculum into existing STEM frameworks.
- Participate in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and capstone projects.
Applications are currently open on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested institutions should complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) Form on the FATE Foundation AI Upskilling page.
Unlocking the Future: FATE Foundation Launches AI Upskilling for African Universities
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a “future” concept; it is the current engine of global economic transformation. To ensure African graduates are leaders—not just spectators—in this revolution, the FATE Foundation, in partnership with Google.org and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), has officially launched the AI Upskilling Programme for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
This ambitious initiative targets universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, aiming to bridge the critical gap between academic theory and industry-standard AI application.
Selected HEIs will gain access to the prestigious Google DeepMind AI Research Foundation’s curriculum, localized for the African context. The program offers:
- Capacity Building: Specialized training for lecturers (AI Champions) to master Neural Networks, Transformer Architectures, and Fine-tuning.
- Student Empowerment: Targeted training for final-year STEM students to boost global employability.
- Sustainable Integration: Resources to embed AI modules directly into existing STEM frameworks.
Important Dates & How to Apply
The program is rolling out across 2024–2026, but the selection process for the next cohort is active now.
- Application Status: Open (First-come, first-served basis).
- Deadline: Applications are reviewed periodically; however, institutions are encouraged to apply by March 31, 2026, for the upcoming academic cycle.
- Application Link: Institutions can submit their interest via the Official FATE Foundation Portal.
Don’t let your institution fall behind in the global AI race. Secure your spot and help shape the next generation of African tech innovators.
