Anyone who has paid for fuel to run a generator knows Nigeria’s energy problem is also a business opportunity. Octopus Energy Generation wants to put money behind the young companies solving it.
The African Energy Entrepreneurship Awards 2026 will share US$100,000 in non-dilutive capital among winning startups. Nigeria is on the eligible list, and entries close on 11 December 2026.
About the Programme
The awards are run by Octopus Energy Generation, the investment arm of the Octopus Energy group. They are aimed at technology-focused start-ups working on power distribution, grid management, energy storage or clean generation.
Judges score entries on five things: innovation, access, scalability, impact and expertise. In plain terms, they want to know whether your product is clever, whether it reaches people who lack power, and whether it can grow.
Benefits
Winners share US$100,000 in non-dilutive capital, which means no equity is taken. The money is meant for product development and deployment, so think inverters, field pilots and engineering hires rather than office furniture.
You also get mentorship, industry insights and introductions across Octopus Energy’s network, which can lead to follow-on funding. The terms and conditions mention a £75,000 prize pool split between three winners, so check the official page for the exact structure before you plan around a figure.
Eligibility Criteria
- Your start-up is based in an eligible Sub-Saharan African country, and Nigeria is included.
- It is a technology-focused energy business, particularly in distribution, grid management, storage or clean generation.
- The business is no more than five years old.
- You have fewer than 20 full-time employees, unless the organisers approve an exception.
- You are not financed by, or seeking financing from, coal mining, coal-fired power or upstream oil and gas.
Documents Needed to Apply
No document checklist is published. The entry form asks you to tell the story of your business, so have these ready:
- Where you operate and what your product does
- Milestones reached so far, with real numbers such as connections, kilowatts or customers
- What makes your technology different from a standard solar installer
- Your growth plan and how you would spend the funding
Scalability and a believable budget decide a lot of entries. Our business plan service can help you turn your numbers into a plan that reads well to judges. Your company will also need to be properly set up, and our business registration service covers that.

Final Thoughts
Few markets need cleaner, cheaper power as badly as ours. If you are building the technology that closes that gap, this is capital with no equity strings attached.
