AU-EU Youth Action Lab Entrepreneurship Grant 2026: €31,500 for Youth-Led Organisations in Africa

The AU-EU Youth Action Lab Entrepreneurship Grant 2026 is now open, and Nigerian organisations have less than three weeks to apply. This is a €31,500 grant for youth-led nonprofits and social enterprises working on economic opportunities for young people, and it is one of the few pan-African funding opportunities that explicitly makes young people the decision-makers, not just the beneficiaries. The deadline is September 23, 2026 at 1:00 PM Central African Time, and the grant period runs for 12 months from January to December 2027.

This is the final Call for Proposals from the Youth Action Lab, a joint initiative of the African Union and the European Union. If your organisation qualifies, this is the last cycle.

What the Grant Is For

The AU-EU Youth Action Lab Entrepreneurship Grant 2026 targets youth-led organisations that are already working on economic participation for young people, not organisations that plan to start doing so after receiving the money.

The grant focuses on three specific challenge areas that the programme has identified as critical to youth economic inclusion:

The first is access to skills development that matches local economic realities and supports young people in starting their own enterprises. This covers training programmes, apprenticeships, vocational support, and any structured intervention that builds the practical capacity of young people to participate in the economy on their own terms.

The second is the responsible growth of youth-led social enterprises that take social and environmental boundaries seriously. This is for organisations that are already running an enterprise with a social or environmental mission and need support to grow that enterprise in a way that remains accountable to the community it serves.

The third is advocacy for an enabling environment for young entrepreneurs. This covers organisations doing policy engagement, regulatory reform, access to finance campaigns, or any other work that removes systemic barriers to young people starting and growing businesses.

Your proposal must be directly tied to at least one of these three areas. A general youth development proposal that does not connect clearly to economic participation will not be competitive.

Who Qualifies

The eligibility criteria for the AU-EU Youth Action Lab Entrepreneurship Grant 2026 are specific and worth reading carefully before you invest time in a proposal.

Your organisation must be a registered nonprofit operating as a Trust, Community Based Organisation, NGO, Civil Society Organisation, or Cooperative with a clear social or environmental mission. The social enterprise activity within your organisation must exist to sustain and advance that mission. If the income-generating work is a side activity unrelated to your mission, you do not qualify.

Your organisation must be genuinely youth-led. This means young people aged 18 to 35 must make up 100% of the organisation’s governance and have primary decision-making power over the organisation’s direction and programmes. More than 80% of the staff directly implementing the project must also be aged 18 to 35. This is not a box-ticking exercise. The application process asks you to demonstrate this in concrete terms.

Your organisation must be formally registered in your country with a dedicated organisational bank account, a documented governance structure, and at least 12 months of operating history. Newly formed organisations are not eligible for this cycle.

Your organisation must be located and registered in one of the 12 eligible African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, the Somaliland Region of Somalia, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Your proposed activities must also take place in one or more of these countries.

One additional structural point: the programme does not fund purely for-profit SMEs with no social mission, and it does not fund NGOs that rely entirely on donor funding with no income-generating component. Your organisation needs to sit clearly in the space between these two, combining a genuine mission with a functioning enterprise model.

The Grant Amount and Structure

Individual organisations can apply for up to €31,500. Consortium applications are also accepted, meaning two or more youth-led organisations can apply jointly with a combined proposal. The funding covers a 12-month implementation period from January 2027 to December 2027.

There is one important condition on how the money is used. Any profits generated through the enterprise activities supported by this grant must be reinvested into the organisation’s mission. Private distribution of profits disqualifies the application.

Innovation Grants vs Entrepreneurship Grants

The Youth Action Lab runs two grant types in this final call: Innovation Grants and Entrepreneurship Grants. You can only apply to one. If your work is more focused on testing or scaling a new social innovation without a strong enterprise model component, the Innovation Grant track may be the better fit. How to Apply

The application process requires a clear project proposal that describes the challenge you are addressing, the solution your organisation is implementing, who benefits and how, and what measurable results the grant will support. You will also need to demonstrate your organisation’s youth-led governance structure, financial sustainability, and operational track record.
