The ECOWAS Startup Award 2026 is now open to startups across West Africa, including Nigeria, with a total cash prize of US$65,000 available to the top three businesses. The competition is part of the Economic Community of West African States’ effort to recognise startups using innovation and technology to address problems in the region. Applications opened on August 3, 2026, and the deadline is August 31, 2026.
What Is the ECOWAS Startup Award About?
This is the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards. The programme is looking for businesses with working products or services, evidence of market activity and the potential to grow beyond their current market.
ECOWAS plans to select 60 startups from 12 participating member states. The startups will compete across six areas:
- EdTech and Skills Development
- FinTech
- HealthTech
- AgriTech and Food Systems
- CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation
- Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech
Selected startups will take part in virtual masterclasses from September 21 to 25, followed by a physical programme in Abuja from September 28 to 30. The regional finals are scheduled for September 30.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is open to entrepreneurs from ECOWAS member states, including Nigerian founders.
Your startup must:
- Be registered and based in an ECOWAS member state.
- Have operated for at least two years.
- Have a working product or service.
- Show market traction or clear potential to scale.
- Submit the required business and financial documents.
This means a brand-new idea without a working product is unlikely to fit the competition. The organisers are looking for businesses that have already done some work in the market and can show where they are going next.
What Can You Win?
The total prize pool is US$65,000, shared among the top three startups:
- 1st place: US$30,000
- 2nd place: US$20,000
- 3rd place: US$15,000
There is also support beyond the cash prizes. Finalists and winners can gain regional visibility, investor connections through deal rooms, networking opportunities with founders and development partners, and a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme. Some selected startups may also receive digital tools such as computers, accessories and software.
What Documents Do You Need?
Applicants should prepare their documents before starting the application.
The requirements include:
- National passport or approved ECOWAS identity document for the lead founder
- Recent passport photograph
- Business registration certificate, where applicable
- Two years of financial statements, management accounts or financial projections
- Business plan of not more than 10 pages
- Pitch deck of not more than 10 slides
- One-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format, not exceeding 100MB
The application also allows applicants to save their work and return later before submitting the completed form.
How Will Startups Be Selected?
The assessment looks at several parts of the business. Problem clarity and solution fit carry 20%, while innovation and originality also carry 20%. Team capacity and execution account for 15%, with market potential, business viability, social impact and alignment with ECOWAS priorities making up other parts of the assessment.
This is important for founders preparing their pitch. A good product alone will not be enough. Your application needs to show the problem, the market, the team, the business model and why the solution can grow.
Deadline and Application Link

If your startup has been operating for at least two years and you can show a working product, market traction and room for growth, the ECOWAS Startup Award 2026 is worth applying for. The US$65,000 prize is attractive, but the regional exposure, investor access and six-month support could be just as useful for a growing West African business.
