The MTN-WWF Africa PachiPanda Challenge 2026 is built on the belief that Africa’s environmental challenges should be solved by the people who understand them best. Across the continent, young innovators are creating practical solutions to problems such as plastic pollution, poor waste management, climate change, clean energy, water scarcity, and sustainable agriculture. Many of these ideas have the potential to make a real difference, but they often struggle to move beyond the prototype stage because of limited funding, mentorship, and market exposure.

The PachiPanda Challenge was created to change that. Organised by MTN Group in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the programme helps young entrepreneurs turn environmental innovations into viable businesses that can create lasting impact across Africa. Rather than rewarding ideas alone, the challenge focuses on developing entrepreneurs through training, expert mentorship, business support, and opportunities to compete on a continental stage.

From Local Innovation to Continental Impact

What began as a youth innovation challenge in Zambia has grown into a pan-African initiative involving several MTN operating countries. Every participating country runs its own national competition before sending its top innovators to compete at the Africa Grand Finale.

The programme is designed to help participants strengthen both their innovations and their entrepreneurial skills. Shortlisted applicants take part in an intensive innovation sprint where they receive coaching on customer discovery, business modelling, value proposition design, and pitching to investors.

The goal is simple. Help young founders build solutions that are technically sound, commercially viable, and capable of improving environmental sustainability within their communities.

Who Can Apply?

The MTN-WWF Africa PachiPanda Challenge 2026 is open to young innovators who are passionate about using technology and entrepreneurship to solve environmental problems.

Applicants should generally:

• Be between 18 and 35 years old (age requirements may vary slightly by country).
• Apply individually or as a team of up to three members.
• Be citizens or legal residents of a participating country.
• Have an innovative environmental solution or youth-led SME.
• Be willing to participate in the programme’s training and pitching activities if shortlisted.

The organisers welcome both early-stage ideas and businesses that already have a working prototype or pilot project. However, solutions that demonstrate proof of concept are often given stronger consideration during the selection process.

What Will Winners Receive?

The biggest reward is not simply the cash prize.

National winners receive support that can help them continue developing their businesses long after the competition ends.

Depending on the participating country, successful innovators may receive:

• Cash prizes and seed funding.
• Business incubation and mentorship.
• Human-centred design and innovation training.
• Exposure to investors and industry leaders.
• Business modelling and pitch development support.
• National media visibility.
• The opportunity to represent their country at the Africa PachiPanda Grand Finale, where continental winners compete for additional recognition and funding.

Past editions have awarded national first-place winners US$5,000, with second and third-place winners also receiving cash prizes in many participating countries. Prize structures are announced separately for each national competition.

How to Build a Strong Application

Judges are looking for more than a creative idea.

They want evidence that your solution can solve a real environmental problem.

A strong application should explain:

• The challenge your innovation addresses.
• Why existing solutions are not enough.
• How your technology or business creates measurable environmental impact.
• Who will benefit from the solution.
• How you plan to scale if selected.

Applications that include pilot results, customer feedback, or working prototypes often stand out because they demonstrate that the innovation has already moved beyond the concept stage.

Deadline and How to Apply

The MTN-WWF Africa PachiPanda Challenge is organised country by country, meaning there is no single continental application deadline for the 2026 edition. Each participating country announces its own application dates, eligibility requirements, prize structure, and competition timeline. At the time of writing, the 2026 application windows are being released progressively by participating MTN operating companies.
