The NourishNext West Africa Youth Agrifood Innovation Challenge 2026 is looking beyond farming. It is searching for young innovators who can solve the everyday problems that prevent nutritious food from reaching millions of people across West Africa. Every year, huge quantities of fruits and vegetables are lost because of poor storage, weak transportation systems, limited processing facilities, and inefficient markets. These challenges affect farmers, businesses, and consumers alike.

Instead of treating these problems as unavoidable, the NourishNext Challenge is inviting young entrepreneurs to build practical solutions that strengthen the entire agrifood value chain. Selected innovators will receive US$5,000 in seed funding, expert mentorship, business development support, and the opportunity to showcase their innovations before investors, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the region.

A Competition Designed for Builders, Not Just Dreamers

Many innovation competitions welcome ideas that exist only on paper. The NourishNext West Africa Youth Agrifood Innovation Challenge takes a different approach.

The organisers want solutions that have already moved beyond the idea stage. Your innovation does not need to be a large business, but it should have a working prototype, proof of concept, or a minimum viable product (MVP) that demonstrates it can solve a real problem. Preference will be given to innovations that have already been tested and show clear potential for growth and wider adoption.

The programme is led by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) in partnership with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and ECOWAS. It focuses on strengthening fruit and vegetable value chains in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Senegal.

Who Can Apply?

The challenge is open to young innovators who are developing solutions that improve food systems across West Africa.

To be eligible, applicants should:

• Be between 18 and 35 years old.
• Women-led innovations may apply up to the age of 40.
• Be from one of the participating countries, including Nigeria, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal.
• Have a solution that is beyond the idea stage with a prototype, proof of concept, or MVP.
• Apply as a startup, MSME, cooperative, youth-led organisation, or social enterprise. Formal business registration is not compulsory.

Innovations may focus on areas such as:

• Food processing and preservation.
• Packaging innovations.
• Cold storage and post-harvest management.
• Supply chain and logistics.
• Digital agriculture.
• Market access solutions.
• Nutrition education.
• Consumer behaviour and healthy diets.
• Fruit and vegetable production and value addition.
